  • Description
  • Literature

The testing of soft tissues and various biomaterials can provide important insight into the material properties for research purposes. Typical specimens include skin, collagen, muscular tissues, and hydrogels; each of which are often delicate in nature and have low strength values. Properly testing these materials for accurate results presents a unique set of challenges.

The challenges of testing soft biological tissues are:

  • Testing in vitro
  • Repeatable strain measurement
  • Secure gripping of specimens

Instron Solution:

  • Testing in vitro – Testing in vitro ensures that the mechanical properties of natural tissues are maintained and that bio-engineered tissues are tested in their working environment. The BioPuls™ Bath, which has an adjustable temperature controller, allows for the testing of specimens at in vivo conditions. The bath is also compatible with submersible pneumatic grips and compression platens.
  • Repeatable strain measurement – Due to the fragile nature of biological soft tissues, a non-contacting extensometer is the ideal solution. The AVE 2 Non-Contacting Video Extensometer can precisely measure elongation under both standard and in vitro conditions.
  • Secure gripping of specimens – Pneumatic grips are recommended to grip the specimens without tearing or inducing slippage. They allow for adjustable gripping pressure and a choice of face dimensions and surfaces. Typically, serrated or flat faces with low grit sandpaper are used for best results.
