ISO 604:2002 Compressive Properties of Plastics
ISO 604:2002 is a test method to determine compressive properties of un-reinforced and reinforced plastics. Using compression platens to apply a force, the properties obtained are compressive strength, compressive yield point, and modulus. The standard specimen for strength determination is a right cylinder or prism 50mm in height for modulus determination and 10mm in height for strength determination.
The challenges of testing to this standard are:
- Compressive strain measurement
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard
Instron's Solution:
- Compressive strain measurement – An extensometer is required by the standard to accurately measure strain. Advanced strain solutions: Non-contacting extensometers, such as the Advanced Video Extensometer 2 (AVE 2) and automatic contacting extensometers, such as the AutoX 750, have the accuracy to measure modulus. These solutions require little influence from the operator and can resulted in improved repeatability. Clip-on extensometers also meet the measurement accuracy stated in ISO 604.
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard – Instron's Bluehill® Universal testing software has advanced pre-built methods available with pre-configured plastic specific calculations helping to ensure compliance.
It is important to review ISO 604:2002 in order to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and results requirements.
Plastics Testing Solutions Brochure
The Plastics Testing Solutions brochure is a 40-page, applications-focused, and standards-based brochure. Important standards such as ISO 527-1, -2, -3, ISO 11443, ISO 75, ASTM D638, Astm D3835, are covered in a detailed testing challenge and solution format. The brochure addresses the most prominent and widely-used standards in the materials testing industry for plastics. Test types such as Impact, Rheology, Thermo-Mechanical, Specimen Preparation, Mechanical Testing, Dynamic/fatigue, and Hardness are described in great detail.

2630 Series Strain Gauge Extensometers
The 2630-100 series of extensometers offers speed of attachment and ease-of-use. The light-weight, rugged cross-brace design eliminates errors caused by physical distortion, while built-in protection ensures that damage is not caused by over-extension. The low operating-force arms of the extensometer reduce the possibility of knife-edge slippage when testing hard or smooth surfaced materials.
