Intraocular Lens testing
An intraocular lens (IOL) involves the insertion of a small lens into the eye, usually replacing the existing crystalline lens because it has been clouded over by a cataract, or as a form of refractive surgery to change the eye's optical power . It is anchored in front of the crystalline lens behind the pupil of the eye, and functions much like a traditional contact lens except that it is left in the eye indefinitely and cannot be seen or felt by the patient.
This method allows the eye to continue focusing naturally while safely adjusting the patient's refractive error to provide excellent image quality and can be removed at any time, providing a totally reversible procedure.
We recommend testing with 5942 universal testing machine for higher accuracy and the ability to mount the operator panel in the best position.
The lens is tested in compression, in a saline bath with the machine mounted horizontally.
The peak loads are very small, in the region of 0.005 to 0.05N, a 5N load cell was used for maximum sensitivity.
The software used should be Bluehill 3 and we recommend using our TestCam Video Recording and Playback Module combined with a USB microscope for a better understanding of how the test was conducted and to match events on the test curve with corresponding video images.
